A hobby that we started in our garage with machines built out of recycled home appliances, led to the discovery of the richness and diversity of single origin chocolate.Our journey soon developed into a chocolate obsession that continues to this day. Along the way our passion for artisanal and handcrafted foods led us, almost naturally, into coffee and home made ice cream.

We believe that chocolate in its purest form is special and should be nurtured, celebrated and crafted in line with artisanal values. Each product must reflect the influence of nature along with the personalities of the cocoa farmer and chocolate maker. Choosing to make our chocolate from the cocoa bean (from “Bean to Bar”) allows us to develop our own unique flavour profiles as we control all the critical processes from bean selection to roasting, grinding, refining and conching.

GROWN AND CRAFTED IN AFRICA BY AFRICANS

handAfrica produces more than 70% of the world’s cocoa beans but makes less than 1% of the world’s chocolate. With most of this 1% being low quality milk chocolate, we are one of only a handful of chocolate companies producing high premium, quality artisan chocolate on the continent.

BEAN TO BAR

We were the first ‘Bean to Bar’ artisanal chocolate maker in South Africa and amongst only a few in the world. Most of the chocolate currently available on the market is mass produced by large international companies. Produced from cocoa mass or liquor and treated as a commodity, there is no acknowledgement of the farmer or chocolate maker in the process. We make our chocolate from carefully sourced cocoa beans where the chocolate reflects the personality and passion of the maker.

SUSTAINABLY SOURCED COCOA BEANS

All of our cocoa beans are traceable to farm level and are free from any people exploitation. Our African Collection, Sweet Hand Crafted Collection and enrobed fruit is UTZ certified, meaning that we support sustainable cocoa farming where farmers implement practices with respect for people and  planet.

COMBINATION OF CUSTOM BUILT AND SMALL SCALE LAB EQUIPMENT IN MICRO BATCHES

Our chocolate factory consists of a combination of machines built out of recycled home appliances and modern laboratory equipment specially selected to allow us to produce high quality micro batches of chocolate. To make a batch of chocolate can take us anything between 5 and 7 days.

WE ARE SITUATED IN THE CAPE WINELANDS OF SOUTH AFRICA

Our chocolate factory is housed in an old Cape Dutch home where visitors can see us making chocolate through glass walls. We get a lot of our inspiration from our surroundings where some of the best quality wines in the world are produced.
